Feeling Lonely When You’re Surrounded by People

It is possible to have family, colleagues, friends or a partner and still feel lonely.

It is possible to have family, colleagues, friends or a partner and still feel lonely.

Loneliness is about connection, not simply the number of people in the room.

Why can I feel lonely around other people?

You may have plenty of everyday contact but little opportunity to talk about how you really feel.

Perhaps you are always the person helping others, your relationships have become mainly practical, or you feel that people know the role you perform rather than the person underneath it.

Being included is not always the same as belonging

You can attend social events and still feel outside the group.

This may be particularly noticeable after a life change, when your circumstances differ from friends, or when you feel pressure to appear fine.

Ask what kind of connection is missing

Instead of asking only ‘Why am I lonely?’, consider what you want more of.

Do you need somebody to talk honestly with? More shared interests? Affection? Regular companionship? People who understand a particular experience? Different needs may require different kinds of connection.

Try a little more honesty

You do not need to reveal everything at once.

Choosing one trusted person and saying that you have been feeling disconnected or would like to spend more time together can create an opening for a different kind of conversation.

Do not measure connection by social media

Seeing other people’s gatherings, holidays or family moments can make your own relationships look inadequate.

Online snapshots do not show the quality of those relationships or what somebody may be experiencing privately.

Build repeated contact

Connection often develops through seeing the same people regularly rather than one-off attempts to socialise.

A weekly activity, volunteering role, coffee with somebody or regular phone call can gradually create familiarity and trust.

When might more support help?

If feeling disconnected is persistent and is affecting your mood, confidence or ability to engage with people, consider talking to your GP or a counsellor.
